Railroads
passing thoough New Castle County offer good opportunities for the movement
of both passengers and goods.
Amtrak
operates approximately 90 trains daily in Delaware, primarily Acela
Express, Regional and Metroliner trains serving the Northeast Corridor.
Service is provided at the Wilmington and Newark train stations. Volume
of operations and traffic have made Wilmington
the 11th busiest station in the Amtrak national system for FY 2006,
and account for its significance as a regional hub.
SEPTA
light rail is a commuter option arranged by DART First State linking
Northern Delaware to downtown Philadelphia, with possible connection
to the Philadelphia International Airport by switching trains in Center
City. The R2 train stops at the Newark, Churchman’s Crossing, Wilmington
and Claymont stations.
Two major
companies operate on the I-class railroads in New Castle County. Norfolk
Southern Railway System subsidiary offers service from the Midwest
to Delaware, while CSX
Transportation Inc. connects the state along the eastern seaboard
from Miami to New England and north to Canada, it also provides access
west to Pittsburgh and Chicago.
The
Port of Wilmington,
Delaware is a full-service deepwater port and marine terminal handling
over 400 vessels per year with an annual import/export cargo tonnage
of over 4 million tons. Today, Delaware's port is the busiest
terminal on the Delaware River. It covers over 308 acres and is readily
accessible to East Coast markets via interstate I-95. Rail access
to the Port is available via Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation,
with railcar loading docks located next to terminal warehouses.

Commuters
in New Castle County have an alternative to the highways system as DART
First State provides transportation through 44 bus routes and paratransit
services throughout the county. The dense network of routes offers connectivity
to different localities and links to other means of transportation.
An express service from Wilmington to the state capital Dover in Kent
county is also available on weekdays.
New
Castle Airport is ideally situated for tenants who range from
major corporations to individual owners of aircraft. The airport is
just a 10-minute drive from the Wilmington Amtrak station with 90-minute
connections to New York City or Washington, DC.
I-95, I-295
and the New Jersey Turnpike—the gateways to Washington, DC, New Jersey
and New York—are only a five-minute drive from the airport.
Philadelphia
International Airport (PHL) is the biggest
airport facility in the area, less than half an hour drive from the
county seat in downtown Wilmington. In 2005, PHL accommodated a record
31.5 million passengers, including 4.1 million international passengers,
and handled more than 535,000 aircraft takeoffs and landings. Thirty
airlines, including five low-cost carriers, offer 700 convenient daily
nonstop flights to more than 120 cities, including 52 daily nonstops
to 31 international destinations. More than 558,000 tons of cargo
and mail are moved annually by commercial airlines and a half-dozen
cargo carriers.
