distinct feature of the profile of New Castle County is the tradition
of technological advancements developed over time in the fields
of chemical engineering, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, and
most recently in energy conservation and fuel efficiency. The presence
of companies like DuPont, AstraZeneca, Hercules, Intervet, Agilent
Technologies, Syngenta, W.L. Gore illustrates this trend and hosting
their headquarters and operation facilities has made New Castle
County home to many novel solutions. Thus,
it was the birthplace of well-known products as Corian, Gore-Tex,
Lycra and Tyvek, and continues to be an incubator of innovation
The
strong technological resource-base is also supported by the work
conducted in the University of Delaware and technology-oriented
institutions like the Delaware Technology Park and Delaware Biotechnology
Institute.
University of
Delaware is the largest higher education institution in the State
of Delaware with over 20,000 students. The university is nationally
recognized for the quality of its chemical engineering program,
ranked in the top ten in this field across the country. Also, the
News and World Report has put the Electrical and Computer Engineering
program in the top 50 Best Engineering Colleges. The University
works cooperatively with the area’s cultural, business and technical
institutions committed to increase scientific and social knowledge
for the enrichment of the larger society.
The Delaware
Biotechnology Institute is a partnership among government, academia
and industry to help establish the Delaware as a center of excellence
in biotechnology and the life sciences. The Institute works to facilitate
a biotechnology network of people and facilities to enhance existing
academic and private-sector research, catalyze unique cross-disciplinary
research and education initiatives, and to foster the entrepreneurship
that creates high-quality jobs.
The
Delaware
BioScience Association is a non-profit
trade association that serves its members and the State of Delaware
by collaborating with other local businesses and organizations to
advance the growth of the bioscience industry in Delaware and the
region
Delaware Technology
Park, a 40-acre research center, is a partnership among the State
of Delaware, the University of Delaware, and the private sector.
It is home to some of the most innovative start-up companies and
research centers in the region, including the Delaware Biotechnology
Institute and the Fraunhofer Center for Molecular Biotechnology.
